Did you know...

A few things worth composting over

Organic waste in landfills ( and unturned compost piles) create methane because they don't have access to oxygen.

Its all because of chemistry. When organics break down they have a couple possible things they turn into when decomposing. If oxygen is present, they will turn into C02 and water(H20), but ... if no oxygen is present ( like if they are buried under mountains of garbage, or in your unturned compost pile ) then your organics must resort to breaking down into methane (CH4)

5 gallons of food waste sent to a landfill creates the same GHG emissions as a gallon of gas in your car

How can it be? That's unbelievable, but its all because of how much more potent methane is in the greenhouse gas calculation. Methane is believed to be as much as 86 times more damaging than CO2 and food waste in landfills create this gas primarily. Time to make some life changes!

Methane is 80 times more damaging than CO2

Due to the chemical bonds within its molecule methane is much more efficient at absorbing heat than carbon dioxide (as much as 86 times more), making it a very potent greenhouse gas.

57% of an average American's trash can is compostable

Just take a peek at your trash can. There is mail, cardboard, paper towels, not to mention your obvious food scraps. So much wasted food. I know... I can only eat so many leftovers too...

Landfills are the nation's third-largest source of methane emissions

Right behind the burning natural gas, and cow farts... unless you convince everyone to stop heating their homes or eating less beef ( fat chance, right? ) composting at home is the next most reasonable thing we can do. :)
